Welcome to CostaRicaWeather.net! The goal of this site is to make Costa Rica’s complex weather a little simpler. To help travelers, expats, and even locals navigate Costa Rica’s sometimes confusing weather patterns. Whether you’re planning a vacation or settling into a new home, understanding the local weather will help you make informed decisions.
I’m Don Mateo. Originally from the East Coast of the United States, I moved to Costa Rica over a decade ago.
I’ve always had an interest in weather. It was probably hurricanes that first caught my attention as a kid, how they strengthened and changed direction, and how weather forecasters would analyze those storms each step of the way. Not to mention watching them stand out in the wind and rain, practically getting blown away. The Weather Channel was new back then, and it was exciting (dating myself!).
Though I didn’t pursue meteorology as a career, my bachelor’s degree in science and passion for the environment increased my understanding of the world’s climates and ecosystems.
When I eventually moved to Costa Rica, I was awed by how unpredictable the weather was. What do you mean they don’t know when and how much rain is going to fall? How can everyone function?
But as the years went on, I realized that there is a lot to know about Costa Rica’s weather, and it is wonderful. Although often still unpredictable, there are rhythms and reasons behind the madness—and that is what I’d like to share with you.
Costa Rica’s weather can vary so much from one region to another, or even from day to day.
What might be dry season on the Pacific coast could be rainy season on the Caribbean. A thunderstorm in the mountains can cause pouring rain, while it’s completely clear and sunny at a beach 15-minutes away.
This is the magic and mystery of Costa Rica’s weather. When we understand it, it’s even more impressive.
Bookmark our home page and check back frequently to see what kind of weather is rolling through your neighborhood or desired travel locations. On that page, you’ll find satellite and radar maps. I’ve been testing different live weather maps to see which ones display well and are accurate. I’ll be constantly monitoring them and updating as necessary.
Another helpful resource is the CostaRicaWeather.net Facebook page. I share weather happenings in Costa Rica many times per day to help give a full picture of what is going on. I also share some pretty pictures and cool videos.
Thanks for visiting CostaRicaWeather.net—keep your eye to the sky!
