This week will bring heavier than usual rainfall across Costa Rica but not from the completely false rumor of a cyclone that was spread across social media platforms this weekend.
Here’s what’s happening: While the country will experience the typical afternoon and evening showers of an active rainy season, there’s potential for more intense storm-like conditions to develop between Wednesday and Saturday along parts of the Pacific region.
This involves a possible low-pressure system detaching from the Intertropical Convergence Zone, which could trigger heavier rain and downpours by creating a strong southwesterly wind flow toward the Pacific. This would bring significant moisture into the Pacific region and, to a lesser extent, surrounding areas.
Current analysis by Costa Rica’s National Meteorological Institute (IMN) highlights Guanacaste and areas near the Gulf of Nicoya, as well as the northern part of the Central Pacific, as having the highest potential for these more intense conditions. Wednesday afternoon through Friday are expected to be the most active days. Localized flooding could occur in these regions.
Adding to the concern, Tropical Wave #5 is expected to pass through Costa Rica on Friday, which will further enhance atmospheric instability and rainfall intensity along its path.
Most of the country will start with partly to mostly cloudy conditions during the beginning of the week – perfect for early morning activities and travel. From Thursday to Saturday, expect cloudier skies with intermittent rains along the Pacific coast, while the Central Valley, Northern Zone, and Caribbean mountains experience variable rainfall.
Mostly cloudy conditions will dominate throughout the week nationwide. The Pacific region may experience more intense storm-like conditions from Wednesday to Friday, while the Central Valley, Northern Zone, and Caribbean mountains will see mostly cloudy skies with intermittent rain.
Overcast skies will cover most of the country. From Wednesday to Saturday, the Pacific will experience cloudier conditions with intermittent rain, while the Central Valley, Northern Zone, and Caribbean mountains see variable rain patterns.
