Costa Rica Weather Forecast: May 15 to 21, 2025

Here’s your Costa Rica Weather forecast for the next seven days. But first let’s talk about what’s been happening this week.

Recent Weather Events

With the passage of Tropical Wave #1 Tuesday and the position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone just to Costa Rica’s south, atmospheric conditions have been very unstable this week causing heavy afternoon showers and thunderstorms.

In Santa Ana and Pavas (Central Valley) downstream gusts produced quick damaging winds on Monday afternoon blowing umbrellas and loose roof tiles around the streets. According to the Meteorological Institute, these gusts happen when wind falls from overhead clouds, hits the ground and expand quickly. It was a quick event that didn’t cause a lot of damage, but definitely caught the attention of local residents!

Heavy rains with localized flooding were reported in some areas Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday especially along the southern Pacific slope and Central Valley. In southern areas like Dominical and Perez Zeledon, rivers swelled over their banks causing washouts a localized problems.

Even with all this, mornings have been overall quite nice around Costa Rica with sun or partial cloudiness.

Looking Ahead

Costa Rica will continue to experience typical rainy season conditions on the Pacific side over the next seven days, characterized by weak trade winds, rising midday temperatures, unstable Pacific waters, and increasing cloudiness from late morning through the afternoon. Rain and downpours accompanied by thunderstorms (especially in the afternoons) are likely to continue, so keep an umbrella handy!

Two key factors will create greater atmospheric instability from today to Saturday:

  • The Intertropical Convergence Zone positioned over the country
  • Tropical Wave #2, which will pass over this weekend. Learn what Tropical Waves are with this post

These conditions will result in more significant rainfall in the next few days compared to the start of next week, which should be drier.

What to Expect Daily

Mornings

Partly cloudy conditions across both the Pacific and Caribbean regions. Be aware of the unstable conditions in the Pacific maritime areas with isolated showers possible near the coast.
